The brothers of Britpop Liam and Noel Gallagher, Oasis, have consistently been one of the biggest influences in indie rock the last 15 years. Aiming to make a "colossal" record, their latest, Dig Out Your Soul, features orchestras and choirs, along with the more traditional Oasis sounds!
A Little Bit About: Oasis
It all started for Oasis with their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe, which many fans and critics still claim to be their finest work. With rock & roll songs about the rock & roll lifestyle, the Gallagher brothers swaggered their way into the music industry and made sure they were instantly noticed. Hot on the heels of Definitely Maybe came the subsequent years' follow up (What's The Story?) Morning Glory, propelling the boys to the pinnacle of their fame. Sparking a rivalry with fellow UK band Blur, dubbed "the Battle of Britpop", did nothing but help their popularity. Morning Glory spawned several top ten hits, including the no.1s 'Wonderwall'. 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'Some Might Say'.
The hype leading up to Oasis' third album was immense. When Be Here Now was finally released, it became the fastest-selling album in UK history. In between writing new material and touring all over the world, Oasis released a collection of B-sides titled The Masterplan, before the band delved into their psychedelic influences with Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and Heathen Chemistry.
Perhaps victims of their own high standards, these two albums, despite solid sales and number-one spots, failed to impress some critics and fans. However, their return three years later with the highly acclaimed Don't Believe The Truth, brought back the style and sound of their early records, in a positive response to previous criticism. The more mature lyrical approach taken on the record was also praised, with Oasis acknowledging their hell-raising past in light of their now more settled lives.
So, amongst more hype and anticipation Oasis have released the slightly more grandiose than usual Dig Out Your Soul, but it certainly doesn't suffer for it. Featuring a mix of orchestral, choir-based sounds along with their more traditional rock & roll, Dig Out Your Soul has seen Oasis strut and swagger their way back to the top of the charts and into the public eye. Are they greatest band ever? Definitely... Maybe!
